Economic Climate - Recap and Inauguration

Date:
January 26, 2009

2009 is starting off in an extraordinarily exciting way!

This year is certain to have its ups and downs and the first few weeks of the New Year are certainly proving that.  The inauguration of the 44th President of the United States of America, Barrack Obama, captured the hearts of people around the world and ignited celebrations across our country, but at the same time the economy continues to wreak havoc around the globe and raise fears here at home.

During his inauguration speech, President Obama said it is understood that we are in the midst of crisis economically.  He talked of bold and swift action to rebuild our economy and reminded Americans that if there is no watchful eye, things can and will go array.  He looked America in the eye and said “Our challenges are real, serious and many.  The way to overcome them is to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and begin the work of remaking America.”

The most important characteristic of 2009 is we are still in troubled waters and will likely remain that way for at least the first two quarters of the year.  No one has a clear view of how far our economy is going to dip or when the true recovery will start.  When we reflect back on 2008, we all realize the past few months have been difficult.  When our friends and neighbors lose their jobs, it’s the worst thing in the world, but when you compare our situation in Central Illinois to other communities around the country like Florida, the east coast, California, or Seattle-Tacoma, we are not nearly as bad off as they are.   It is better here, but it’s still troubled times.

President Obama said he has no doubt the challenges in front of us will be met because we have chosen hope over fear.  If our new president can be optimistic and hopeful for our future, why can’t we?
